Black Drums in Destin

Post by OneTripletail »

Well, we took the Yaks over to Destin this past weekend. Sunday we got into a school of big black drum tailing along the shoreline between docks. First couple of cast nothing then remembered drums eat by smell so switched to gulp shrimp. Next cast bam! Hooked-up. He runs me around a pole and heads straight for the dock before I could persuade him to exit the 10 lb. braid separates. CRAP! Head back out and re-rig. Five cast later hooked-up again but the hook pulls then it happens. Hooked-up again, no pole in play on this one, but a dock is only 20 yards from where we are. It took every bit of strength I had to paddle backwards one handed and holding the rod while he is killing it. I finally get him away from the dock and 10 minutes later have him along side the boat. The boga says 18 lbs. with his tail still in the water so I'm guess 20 lbs. What a fight! Biggest fish to date from the Yak. A lot of fun. Sorry for the crappy picture!
