Stoney Bayou - 9/30/15
I made the mile cart pull back to the spillway this morning. Caught some of the biggest lady fish I've seen on top water right at the spillway. Tide was going out and I caught some 26" - 28" reds on live shrimp and a LiveTarget soft shrimp about 3/4 mile down. Made my way out to Palmetto island and got a few bites. Went back towards the spillway and stopped at a sand bar. Got into some more reds and trout until the dolphins decided they wanted my spot.
The gators were out in force, even had a real good sized one swim underneath me in about 3' water.

All of that area is fabulous. The spillways, the bayou, the creeks. Keep heading down the levee and it gets better in places. There are some pads on the fresh side a mile down that hold some nice bass as well. Way to go on your day. Looks like you had a great one.
I don't know why a lot more people don't fish there. It's really not even that bad of a hike.

Great pix and good job!
I was on that sandbar the weekend before your trip. Had an upper slot red on for about 30 seconds. As it rolled on top near shore, a bull gator exploded on it, showering me with spray.
Just another typical "what the fuh?" moment at the St Marks Refuge.
Impressive that you roundtripped to Palmetto Island from there. That's a decent workout!

I was pretty tired by the time I got back to the truck. Not sure which is harder, putting in at the spillway or at the lighthouse to get to palmetto island area. But I'm always up to the challenge.
Good enough is good enough. Going the extra mile leads to exhaustion.
