Oyster Bay/Smith Island 5/15
Launched mid-morning to the rising tide. More wind than I thought would be out there. Got to my favorite bar and managed a nice mackerel. That was it for most of the morning . Did multiple drifts from the bar to south of Smith Island in much of the grass flat areas. Had some Ladys attach the Chug bug (no floating grass) and had what probably was a big Mack strike and miss. It had very large shoulders and head. Headed toward Smith Island and did some drifts to see if I could pick up a red or something. NADA, but spooked several large schools of large mullet. Ended my drifts at the marked bar south of the island. Flipped my fly around the bar and caught a cat- decided to call it a day. As I was passing the main bar on the way back, the tide had changed and was falling. Decided to try the fly a few more times. Had a huge hit that was quickly stripping line- had to get it on the reel and drag. After a brief tow with what I hoped was a nice red, up came a 3 ft shark. It took off on another run and popped the line. Decided to end the day on a high note. Decided that the "Salt Creature Fly" is going to be a regular part of my fly arsenal. Easy tie and in the last couple of outings has caught most of the fish.

You can also launch off of shell point Beach and make the turn at he long bar if you felt so inclined......but blue dolphin is much closer.
I have been doing very well in this area lately. Lots of trout.
