Fenholloway River - 4-14-2018

Post by SRAces »

My Fenholloway trips will probably start reducing as the water gets warmer and the fish move out on the flats in the grass beds. When that happens all the other launches in the Gulf will get fished more. Hickory Mounds should be seeing trips in the future. :D

The only day to remotely think about fishing was Saturday since Sunday's weather was terrible. My plan was to make it in one of the creeks before low tide and the higher winds. Tim met me at Rocky's for a first light launch. He headed to a back creek area hoping to freshwater fish first and then maybe find some saltwater afterwards. I made it to my creek entrance while the winds were still 6 mph. Caught my first red by 7:35 am. Then the winds started picking up and the casting, let alone keeping the kayak the direction you wanted, became a little more challenging.

I managed to catch 3 reds and 5 trout. Hooked a large alligator gar that I got halfway in before the jig head came loose. :( Around noon I got tired of fighting the wind and headed to find Tim. He was parked in a back creek area sheltered from the wind and catching catfish and bluegills. Tim also caught an released a nice red in the same area he was freshwater fishing. Hooked it on one of his panfish rigs...lol!

Not a lot of pictures. The sunrise, my biggest red and trout, Tim's cooler and red.

Tim had a whole bag of ice sitting on them and just picked the bag up so I could take the picture. He dumped the whole bag in with the fish.

@SRAces do you ever use the Spring Creek launch just east of the Fenholloway? I've fished it, but not the Fenholloway itself...i was sold on the shorter paddle to the mouth.

I have fished Big Spring Creek a lot. That launch and the Fenholloway one are the closest for me to drive to from where I live. Have fished Spring Creek in the winter and landed 100 trout in a single trip from one anchor spot. Have also fished the creeks on both sides of Spring Creek. When hurricane Hermine came through it messed up all the holes in some of the adjacent creeks, but those creeks are still good. Will probably go out of Big Spring Creek more in the summer to fish out away from shore over the grass beds.

Are you eating these Fenholloway fish? I'm not here to judge...I'm always looking for new mullet fishing spots. I understand the water is dilluted eventually but I have no clue where.

Speaking of Alligator Gar, you have to fight them at the Aucilla mouth sometimes worse than Blackfish while Bass fishing with a pink plastic worm lol!

Tim glows in the dark but he seems normal enough, is a heck of a nice guy and sure catches a lot of fish. :D

Give em to Tim he’ll eat anything they use to say. Once the headaches subside I’ll go back for more. Seriously read the advisory before you keep any.

As my Mom says: “ I only have to die once”

If your looking for mullet this is not the place. I rarely see mullet there.
