Crappie! (Aka, Speckled Perch)
It didn't take Tim Cotton long to convince me to take the day off and go river fishing for crappie today. I jumped at the chance to learn something new with a real pro! It was a very slow morning with just a couple of crappie in the cooler, although Tim caught 3 big blue cats up to about 10 pounds on crappie jigs and minnows.
My wife had told me to let her know by 1:00pm if she needed to stop at Southern Seafood to pick up fish for dinner. As slow as it was at that point, I told her to "buy fish". The next message I sent said "if you haven't already bought fish, don't!" We started getting into them good and used up all our minnows by the time we came in about 4:30. The fish were down deep, and they were all 13-14 inches and beautiful. We brought home enough for dinner and I hear the frying pan sizzle as I type this!
I think the last positive trip I posted may have been November, so it's great to finally get 2015 off to a start!

Way to go, Ed and Tim!!
Ed, you're not kidding about Tim being a pro panfish angler (along with other species!)
Let's just say that Cotton ain't crappy with the crappie, but I "speck" he wouldn't argue with that assessment.
I bet you both had a blast!

Great report, as always, Ed! Fishing with Tim has been one of my best strategies over the years. He has been known to pull redfish out of tide pools.
It sounds like Edwade is becoming a double threat now, fresh and salt, in the BBKC!
Good going guys!

Nice puns Jean, and Bill, you're way too kind! Whether it was fishing next to Jean at SGI, or with you anywhere, I get out fished 3 to 1. When Tim saw that I had 3 in the boat to his 2, he got serious and out caught me about 4-1 after that. Tim's got a bit of a competitive streak, if you haven't noticed!

You guys are too funny!!! Ed and I had a great time figuring them out. I still wonder how many we would have caught if we hadn't wasted the morning looking for them. Once we figured out they were deep, we had it made. I'm definitely going to invest in a fish finder soon. I think with the crappy its a must.
Its funny how we all love eating the same fish we enjoyed as kids. I always wonder if its the memory of sharing them with family or its just that our taste buds get warped. My best memories of meals as a kid are of crappy and mullet. What a strange combination. I still love both.
Thanks for a great time Ed. Will check out some other spots soon. It was good to see you catch some fish. Billy and Bob swore it couldn't be done.

Crappie? Late Saturday afternoon, in the midst of a pretty steady rain, my 2nd born convinced me to weather the storm (literally) and go with him in search of crappies. I'm glad he did.

Probably. Give that woman a cork and a bottle of hard cider, and she's good to go.fishinbug wrote:Your wife taught him well.BackCast wrote:The boy must have had a good teacher!
