Gloves or grips?

Post by BackCast »

OK, I'll admit it. I'm a wimp!
Every time I spend more than a couple hours paddling I end up with blisters on the top of my thumbs, especially the right one. I know there are gloves made for paddling and recently learned there are also grips (sleeves) that attach to the paddle. Does anybody use either of these? Any preference? Or am I the only wimpy one here?

callouses should eventually form. The type of paddle can also make a difference. what type do you use?

I've struggled with how to politely say this. Its probably not possible.

Lack of calluses, its the curse of being an office worker. Not paddling between September and March doesn't do a thing to help either. As to the type of paddle I use, it's a Carlisle Magic Plus, like this one... http://store.carlislepaddles.com/produc ... Magic_Plus ... I'm more inclined to blame it on paddling technique than the paddle but could well be wrong. No problem as I keep my thumbs in lne with the paddle's shaft instead of gripping it.

Cotton, don't worry about being polite. I'm a big boy and can take it! I use Dr. Hess Utter Ointment. You should give it a try. She'll be glad you did and you can thank me later.

  All those secrets coming out at once is breathtaking, BackCast. I think a waterproof pair of something fashionable is the way to go. Alligator grips perhaps? Gloves are so...so.. Michael Jackson. :D

fishinbug, those are just things I admit to. None of us wants to participate on a post about my vices!

SwampYaker, that seems like a good solution. I had a friend suggest tennis racquet wrap or bicycle handlebar wrap, both of which are along those same lines of thought. Those options seem a lot better than fumbling with gloves. Thanks.

Okay. If your gripping your paddle, your doing it wrong. Hole your paddle gently and on your downstroke pull with your lower hand and push with your upper hand and your hands should never be higher than your neck. If your holding on for dear life, as my old mountain bike racing coach said,"Your wasting energy".

Thanks. I believe you may have just solved the problem. I've always gripped the paddle, probably something I learned from whitewater rafting where you either keep a firm grip on the paddle or find yourself in the middle of the river with a really stupid look on your face. I don't intend to do any more whitewater so it's time for some technique adjustments.

I use gloves but mainly to minimize the skin cancer risk there and also to have something to fend off hooks attached to nutty boatside ladyfish. I can never get or keep sunscreen on my hands.
