Jackson Kayak Squeaky Chair Fix

Post by capncrunch »

I thought the squeak would go away after some period of breaking in. It got worse....much worse....insanely worse. Dryer sheets loosely wrapped around the poles and a plastic table place mat between the upper and lower seat fabric solved the problem.

Field testing coming soon.

Get a can of Break Free CLP at Walmart in the gun cleaning area and spray it on the areas that cause the squeeks. I use it for Hobie Mirage drive lubrication and protection. Just my 2 cents worth.

Good to see you and witness your much quieter seat, Mike!

I've got dryer sheets on my shopping list to hush up my Big Rig seat. Not sure if it'll improve my catching rate but anything to make me stealthier is probably a good thing.

Thanks for the suggestion, Steve, but I wouldn't want to spray funky stuff on the seat. Messy! The squeak is from the rubbing of the tightly woven mesh fabric on the metal frame, not metal on metal. That layer of dryer sheet fabric cushions the rub. Ingenious, Crunch!

On the Hobie Vantage seat, there is a cord than runs under the seat base. It rubs against the bottom and holds the seat base at the angle you dialed in on the armrest adjustment. That cord rubs against the seat fabric itself and can cause some squeeks. I found the Breakfree CLP worked for me. I even us a little on the plastic mounts the the seat base rests on in the "Vantage" position. Glad to hear the dryer sheets did the trick for you.. If you're like me, you want to be as quiet as you can! Have a great week! :D

Steve, I'll look for that Break Free CLP next time I'm in Wally World. Sounds like I might have some uses for it.

I am now squeak-free!! My intent was to use Crunch's idea of the dryer sheets but I ended up using wide strips of rubber shelf liner instead. They are wrapped around the metal frame where the mesh fabric touches. Sight unseen and amazingly quiet!! What a difference!

Oh, and did stuff in a few dryer sheets for good measure and for that passion fruit/marmalade/waterfall/lemon eucalyptus/apple pie spice fresh scent.

I love Macgyvering. Thanks again, Michael!

Since obtaining my Kraken, I've walked past it in the garage several times and it has not emitted any squeaks or other noises. I have heard my tarpon seat making noises like a barking spider several times last outing. I look forward to learning the jackson language of the chair :A1

Jeeper, how are you liking the Kraken?? Have you taken it through it's paces?

I highly recommend the squeak-free methods described above. Makes all the difference in the world!

We are currently in a snow storm up here in the Atlanta area, sooo I have not had a chance to try it out yet, I don't expect it to be as fast as my Suber 160, but should be close enough. Lookin forward to the comfy chair on my fishing trips.
