Has anyone found a supplier for GSP in Tally?

Post by Shorewalker »

Hello everyone,

I am looking to restock on tying thread that I prefer for tying my jigs - gel spun polyethylene.

If you are not familiar with GSP; it is sells as, among other names, Gudebrod GX1 or GX2 and as Ultra GSP. The material itself is similar to the newer "super braid" lines and has a pretty high breaking strength for its size.

If I can't find it locally, I will pick some up at Barlow's tackle / Cabelas on a trip to Dallas in a couple of weeks. I would prefer to find a local source though both to support local and the fact I have been run through several spools in the last couple of months.

I have checked with Sportsman's Warehouse and even suggested they stock it a few months back, but they are still going through some growing pains in the fly arena so far. Is there a local tackle / fly shop in town or nearby lower GA that I should check?

Thanks in advance,
Greg

GSP response

Thanks, I will try Kevin's.

I was there last week looking for a Mirrodine 27MR (still elusive in tally as well) but I did not check the fly section - DOH.

Last time I checked, they mostly had flies and not much tying material so I didn't think to check for the thread there.

It is definitely worth a stop.

No go for GSP thread at Kevin's.

Kevins basicly stocks fly rods, reels, fly line, streamside accessories, and pre-tied flies. I asked about thread but they said they no longer stocked flytying materials.

It was still worth a shot especially since I drive up Thomasville every day anyway. I just have to make the effort to get out of work on time.

Thanks,

I tried Sportsman Warehouse on Sunday. They have restocked and added stock to their fishing area especially the fly fishing. However, the closest they have to GSP is Kevlar. I already have some Kevlar that I will use until I get back from TX. I just manage to break the Kevlar when I try to lock down on the big bucktail jigs that I have been messing with.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

Order it online then, I do that often myself. You might try calling South Georgia Outdoors in Cairo too. Maybe the Salty Crab in Jacksonville.

Re: Georgiayaker Posting pics of some jigs

I will attempt to post some photos but only if everyone promises not to laugh. Honestly, one of the reasons I want to stop by Barlows is that I want to upgrade the hooks from the relatively inexpensive hooks described by the manufacturer to some "premium" hooks. I feel that putting the hooks in my hand and in the mold is the best way to find a better hook. (The other reason is that the wife wants to take my daughter to "The American Girl Cafe" and I am less enthustiatic about that experience.) Note: I will be in DFW anyway for a class reunion / family visit anyway.

The ability to get the jigs I want with the hooks I want is the primary goal of this mission. In particular, I wanted to make some mid weight jigs with fairly short, very sharp hooks to reach out to those pompano along the beach.

That said I have the cheapo hooks now since I just start pouring lead with gifts I received last Christmas. No reason to waste the better hooks until there is half a chance to get a decent result. I have also tried to teach myself the art of powder painting with mixed results.

I will post the pics in a separte thread as this thread has wandered far and wide already. I will probably post in the General or maybe Off Topic as there is quite a difference between a proper fly and a 1 oz jig. I may try a poll and see if anybody else is making / interested in making there own jigs. Setting up an afternoon meet for melting lead and sharing molds might take some of the boredom during the "closed" season.
