Shrimp Gurgler

Post by bk »

here's a gurgler pattern i whipped up lately for the Kayakbassfishing.com monthly fly challenge. thought i'd share.

The Gurgler (augmented to taste).
Hook: mustad S71S SS 1/0 2x heavy/1x long.
Thread: Brown
Tail: Tan Bucktail, shrimp polar fibre, krystal flash
Body: Shrimp Polar Fibre
Overbody: Brown, 3mm sheet foam cut to shape.
Eyes: 5/32 bead chain

Step 1: Wrap the thread from front to rear. Doesn't need to be perfect as it gets covered up.
Image
Step 2: Tie in Tan Bucktail.

Step 3: Tie in Polar Fibre tail and krystalflash

Step 4: Cut foam to shape and tie in at rear.

Step 5: Dub Polar Fibre up the shank for the body.
Image
Step 6: Fold the foam over the body and secure just short of the eye.
Image
Step 7: Tie on and figure 8 some bead-chain eyes.
Image
Step 8: Bring the thread under the remaining flap up to the eye of the hook. Whip finish and hit with head cement.
Step 9: Trim and apply marker to your liking.

Creating your own lures and catching fish with them has got to give you great satisfaction.
Thanks for always sharing your expertise.

Very detailed descriptions. You are approaching the top 5% of fly tying manuals with that kind of detail. If we could just get out to try these bad boys out. I am jonesing something awful for the salt.

Those are fantastic pictures and great information. Do you have a pic after you stick the hook in your thumb?

Have you tried brushing or teasing out the dubbing to form legs?

yes, and i've modified it some since then as well. aside from brushing out the fiber, i've switched out the bucktail and also moved the eyes to the rear as they weighted down the front too much. got any patterns to share bearsfan?, i'm always looking to try new stuff, as i'm pretty new to the fly fishing in the salt.

Just personal preference but I use bucktail, palmered hackle for the legs and mono eyes.

thank you for the tip on the mono eyes. i liked the look of the eyes at the front, but the bead chain eyes that i used weighted it down. i've also seen someone use bristles from an old hair brush as eyes. i may try that next. thanks all, for your input.

just found this vid..good stuff

Very nice bk. I bet my river smallies would love that come summer. That's one of my favorite baitfish color combos.
