Sulfur Creek Connector Heads Up

Post by garydroze »

Since SMNWR is closed due to Hurricane Michael, I decided Sunday to revisit an old haunt Aucilla River: Sulfur Creek, west of the main river. Landed only catfish and gars in the slightly tainted water, and had a true whopper trout hookup/loss on topwater at the end of outgoing tide on one of the many three-way intersections. But that wasn't the highlight. This was...

I can't be the only one who employs the super skinny, shallow ditch across from & just north of the Aucilla boat ramp (you can just see it on satellite maps) as a shortcut to upper Sulfur Creek. For you others who use it: look out for LOTS of 3-4 foot alligators right now. They were crawling away from me in the inches-deep ditch, then giving up and hugging the bottom as I stepped over them & tried to keep my little canoe from bumping their heads while I drug it past. They seemed too embarrassed to be aggressive. At first it was unnerving, then just got funny.

As I later told a friend, it felt like an interspecies trust exercise.

I've been through that creek once that I'm 99% sure you're referring to and once is 1 more time than times I will ever do it again. I've referenced what happened to me in there on here before but never told the story, nor will I lol! I'm genuinely embarrassed about what my dumb self did!!!!!!

Ah, the imagination runs wild with the possibilities of what happened to you. Lots of things could go wrong in that trickling half mile of swamp water and needle rush.
