Hickory Mound 7/31

Post by yardman32317 »

Due to moving to South Georgia and all it's been too long not getting on the water in my kayak. Put in at Hickory on a rising tide, paddled out to meet a nice 5 mph head wind and started paddling west. Got to my start point and saw too much grass for top water so stayed with a popping cork. Caught a mess of reds, two good enough to take home, and a slew of trout, kept two nice ones. Couldn't have asked for a better day and can't wait to get back out there again.

Good catching, yardman32317! Haven't seen you in a few years. The grass at Hickory Mound has been awful lately.

That’s great information there. I like the part where you went with a popping cork in the floating grass. I’ll have to try that soon.

12-31-20 I tried to post this at the catch all Hickory Mound thread at Big Bend Fishing. It said my IP was blocked because it was blacklisted?

I went to HM today to wet a line for the first time since summertime. I have a few more questions about fishing and the original purpose of this thread, launching/boating.

Do they only bite cut bait or live bait in the winter time? I think I told the story in another thread but I went back more than once last summer with Gulps and sleighed them. Today they didn’t want them, and it wasn’t because they weren’t biting. I could see them chasing the Pinfish and lil Mullet in the clear part of the water :o :o :o I finally caught 1 with a piece of cut bait somebody else had left behind.

Now about boating. Is there a reason why I never see anybody there in a boat, even though there are always vehicles at the landing? The way those fish swim all the way to the swamp line, it seems like more people would be seen there on the marsh line. Maybe people don’t launch just to go 75 yards? They do at Mandalay lol!

Also has anybody here ever slid a kayak or a small boat in at that point where you first see the ocean when you come in from the Jefferson County side? That looks like an easier paddle than from the ramp.

I also saw more big mullet jumping than I’d ever seen today. Another guy was fishing probably 30 yards from me and he wasn’t exactly sleighing them, but he did catch a Redfish big enough to keep (mine was just short) and 4 or 5 small Trout. He had live shrimp.

In the winter fish are a lot more lethargic. But I have watched reds swim slowly and wobble their head chasing a gold spoon. I have not used cut bait or live bait for reds or trout since 1992. I have used it for Tarpon. Reds are receptive to gulp in the winter, and they can be dead sticked when reds are close by. I caught reds recently on top water and spoons. I love fishing in cold climates, but don't do it as much because I hate low tides. Lots of low tides in the winter.
