Hands down the best thread I have read in quite a while. I reread it a second time and it was even better.

I just got a new fly setup this winter but have only used it once on the water

I went with:

8wt TFO BVK

7/8 FWX Nautilus Reel

WF8F Scientific Angler Sharkskin Saltwater Line

Most fly gear is pretty darn good especially when your paying well over $600 for it. I'd worry about choosing the right flies and trying to make them work.

Bought a dozen flies or so from Gander MT. in Ocala because they were on clearance. I've heard clousers and shrimp patterns are best. I've heard gurglers and seaducers are good too. The fly selection is what I found to be the hardest part. Some guys at a fly shop will just set you up with 2 flies and you use them until they work. People who have been doing this for a long time eventually create their own flies and call them funny names and still have fun catching fish. Picking a general all around fly is hard and you have to really start to pay attention to the details on the water to get the right fly patterns. They come small and big so pay close attention and "match the hatch"

And NEVER bring another rod until you catch a fish on fly because you will end up giving it up very quickly. Plan accordingly and anticipate the weather. Try and fish with people who only fly fish. This is a great way to pick up on tips and to learn how to change your fishing tactics.
