I tie on about 30 inches of 20 lb fluorocarbon and use it until only about foot or less is left after all of the reties. Oyster rash happens to line and kayaks. Also every fish in the ocean has teeth that will either cut, nick, or file down your line except for snot cats - they defile the line in other special ways. In the end, you should check your leader often and retie.

I was able to purchase a Penn Battle 4000 off of ebay for $50. Now I have to get a rod to put it on.

I've had little success lately with reds, so I'm glad I circled back to re-read this thread for a pulse check. I am cursed by an addiction to trying too many lures when the clear best answer is stick to the the proven lures and basic techniques.

Reds have been slow lately. I noticed the grass is not growing much. Maybe that is why the water is dirty and if it's dirty and the grass is not growing. Well I wonder if there is an oxygen issue.

The trout are nowhere to be found( probably due to lack of grass)

^^ They're going to artificially prop up the commercial fishermen by taking the recreational bag limits and seasons down to nothing.

I don't think the oil spill has much to do with it. Just nature taking its course. Some years are good, some bad... All dependent upon conditions. People are posting good reports in west Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, which are closer to the rig spill than we are. Glad I caught some nice reds early this year. Last time I was at Econfina in March the seagrass beds were looking strong. I even posted it in a report I wrote. Havnt been down since though....

What I'm seeing is dirty water which gets filtered by green grass which seems to be a little behind its growth pattern. I think this also has an effect on the oxygen content.

I only started fishing this area recently, but I've had pretty good luck myself using the basics in this post. I never limit out but can always reel in something. Most times I leave with dinner at least. I have a lot of luck in Walker Creek. Shell point is good too, lots of sharks and cats though.
