Well...since I don't have my own yak yet I've got to wait on cmccord to get his act together and ask me along, but I just built this 8 wt buggy whip to frustrate myself with. Took it off the lathe last night!

Now all I need is some flies, leaders, tippets, forceps, fly box, vest....

Oh well, even if I had it all I'll probably leave something important in the truck or at home. Any hints from you guys about minimum necessary gear and ways to keep it organized?

Nice rod. Things I bring on the kayak when flyfishing; Rod, leader material, fly box(s), pliers, boga, camera. Boga and pliers attach nicely to the kayak, I have a waterproof patagonia bag for the rest, got to keep those leader spools out of the sun!! Usually bring a cooler with beer too.

What sort of leaders are you rigging for Redfish/Trout water?

i'm relatively new to the salty fly gig but i was told that 50%-25%-25% is a good ratio for tapering your own leader. that said, i currently have about 3ft of 25lb connected to the end of 8wt forward tapered fly line. then, about 3ft of 15lb. and about a foot of 20lb as a bite leader.

you can buy tapered leaders but that can get expensive and i dont think that the redfish care either way.

When you build your leader are you using loop connections or nail knot (or similar). I have looked a little into this and the info I have so far was for either lighter weight aimed at freshwater trout or was printed 20 years ago (I trust the information was very accurate at the time but this is all pre-Honeywell based braids.)

BTW I will prolly end up with a fly reel this weekend. I will be fishing Sunday - but salt or fresh is to be determined.

I read a bit about "Furled Leaders" in Midcurrent Mag online http://www.midcurrent.com/articles/gear ... eader.aspx but I'm not too interested in building the jig to make them. Asked at Kevin's and Lin hadn't really heard about them and didn't stock any (or seem interested). They look interesting though!

I may have to try the furled leader since I always enjoy trying to decipher instructions such as those given. I guess I will need to find some 4# Pline and then head to the local home improvement box store.

for salt i use a perfection loop when attaching the leader to the fly line mainly for ease of switching out leaders. for freshwater, i use a nail knot. in both cases i use a surgeons knot when building the leader. and, of course, a conoeman's knot at the lure.

what type of reel are you buying? salt or fresh? for salt, i just bought a g.loomis eastfork 7-8. damn sweet reel. for fresh i use a ross or a lower end orvis. i dont feel that in freshwater the reel matters as much.

I am planning on the G. Loomis East Fork 7-8 wt from Kevin's. I talked to Lin the day or so after you bought yours and it looks sweet.

greg, you bought the tfo rod didnt you? 7, 8, or 9 wt.?

7 wt tfo LK pro series 9 ft 4 piece. I hope it doesn't suck, the price was prtty good.

When you decide to do it I'd love to help/learn with you - I just don't need another project like that in my tiny apartment, the rod building stuff is enough. Unless I succumb to the fly tying urge. That's just money - not space!

Oh come on that jig isn't just functional, put up a couple of screws, and viola you have a ten foot piece of wall art. If significant other complains just explain about the starving artist that you gave hundreds of dollars for the piece (just be careful not to use it when the sig other is around.)
