Not as much as the salt. I do bring the 4wt with me when I'm bass fishing. I have caught a bunch of Bream. Just haven't really put the time in with it for the bass yet.

I started flyfishing when I was about 8. This video sure makes me want to dig out the old rod.

i consistently catch more fish on the fly over conventional tackle in freshwater. i'd like to get to that point in the salt as well. but i'm not sure that you can get that same advantage in the salt since conditions don't always favor it.

I sure can't say I have figured out flyfishing the salt near Tallahassee even though I am putting in some time lately. While I can't seem to either find many fish or find a fly that many fish want to strike, the shallow water really should favor fly fishing. I feel like flies should be very effective around oyster bars all of the time and on weedy points during the high tides.

Down in South Florida, I do very well on flies with red fish, trout and snook but I have not yet had a single day on the salt up in North Florida that was really good for numbers of fish. My usual day with flies is three to five fish (red fish and trout). I have had some good days in freshwater but I am still not putting it together in the salt when it comes to fly fishing. I am determined to figure it out.

So far, my biggest fly caught reds are on poppers and my best trout have been on clousers. While I don't think the flies I use are the problem I clearly still haven't found a pattern that consistently produces fish. I don't intend to stop trying to figure out the salt game. Flies should work great in the salt.

i agree, bruce. i've catching them mostly on poppers. someone was telling me that "if you are not sight fishing for reds (with the fly), then you are just fishing for trout". i don't put much into this being that i never sight fish for reds, even with conventional tackle. I mean, think about it., if i only casted when i saw a fish, there'd be days that i wouldn't even make a cast. I tend to cast where my experience tells me a fish should be.

that said, i'll be throwing the fly this weekend in the salt if you want to meet up.

bk,

I sent you a long pm elaborating on my latest struggle to find red fish on the fly and my opportunities for fishing in the next few weeks. I know it can be done but chasing reds with flies is not the easiest fishing I have done. Still, I agree with you that sight fishing is not the only way to catch reds on flies.
