I just wanted to see what you guys do about line management. I have some ideas about a product for the kayak and wanted to see how everyone "strips"

I tend to strip to the top of the cutting board on the PA. You still have to deal with the mirage drive and occasional hang on the cutting board tie downs.

I tend to strip top first and then I get down to business! I would be happy to show you one day.


Really though, give me a ring and I will run some ideas by you that I have thought about.

i strip the line into the water next to the yak.
it does tend to foul on lilly pads occasionally when i'm fishing freshwater.

I also strip into the water and it's definitely a drag. That's okay wading because you can pick up more line standing than sitting. I have laid a towel over my lap and that works pretty well.

Last year I did a lot of trout fishing at shell point with a guy that made his strpping basket out of a publix plastic dish holder/dryer. I added wine corks for coil control and it worked well. We were double handing the strip to get the speed right and could not have done it nearly as effecively without a basket. We were getting out of our yaks (wadding)to fish. In the yak a towel works fine for me.

I strip right into my lap in my sit-in yak. Generally I only have the amount of line out that I intend to use so most often it is on the water. I have used a burlap sack like they make sand bags from but usually I have no trouble with simply dropping the line in front of me in the cockpit. ( That is what they call it in sail boats. Is that correct for kayaks?)

I just breifly looked and could not find the one I was looking for, and I do not have my The Fly Shop catolog with me. But, somebody makes a very cool stripping basket, it attaches to your waist or leg. It would work from sitting or standing. It is one of those coiled pop out versions, I have seen them and they look very durable. It comes with an adjustable belt and is about 12 inches deep, and most likely 12 or 14 inches square. It is very cool. Time to google.

Although it is designed for standing I have sat down in mine comfortably before although I haven't fished from the sitting position.

Here is a much cheaper homemade version which I have also had good success with although I prefer to use a belt instead of the bungee cord. Sitting in a kayak though I would think you could go sans belt and be fine.
