Electronics?
I have downloaded this app to use when I fish on my Note 3.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... hingopspro
Does anybody have a GPS/Fishfinder mounted on the Yak? And if so which one are you using?

Re: Electronics?
OK, I'll stick my neck out on this one. They tore me up when I suggested the merits of a smart phone depth finder. Rightly so, trout, red fish and flounder are all going to be found for the most part in shallow water so if you can't feel the bottom with your paddle or hear your hull scrapping on an oyster bar, you are probably too deep.
First three times that I went out during the winter I got fogged in so I do carry a handheld Garmin GPS for around $125. All you need. Navionics has an app for your smart phone that will give you a general idea of your location but not extremely detailed or accurate. Let me know if you want the link.
I have also found that it is a lot harder to get your bearings with your butt on the water than it is standing in a boat. I would also think it would be good security until you get more familiar with the area.

Re: Electronics?
The problem with using your smartphone as a gps is the battery gets depleted fast when you constantly use a gps.

Some have also suggested the following on previous posts (although I'm not sure that this app has any plotting capability although still good map app):
http://www.maptech.com/
Jeff is right about the power drain even though I carry an extra battery. I have started just relying on the GPS.

I think that you will find that most of the plotting charts do not have adequate detail of the shallow inshore creeks and bays that you will probably be fishing. Better to use Google satellite maps and look for fishy looking areas.

Re: Electronics?
Thanks Mongo. I looked at the Navionics. The software is free but they charge for the maps. I will take a look at it. Thanks for the info.

Re: Electronics?
I have the navionics maps and detail is good for offshore adequate for inshore. I like the Garmin series like the gpsmap 76 or better.

Did you have to pay for the navionics maps?jsuber wrote:I have the navionics maps and detail is good for offshore adequate for inshore. I like the Garmin series like the gpsmap 76 or better.

Re: Electronics?
I bought a GPS/fishfinder, mounted the battery and excess wires in a waterproof box and have a pvc drop off my milkcrate setup. I can swap it over to my other kayak quick. I love the GPS function since I only a short time visitor a couple of times a year and it keeps me from guessing which way back to the truck. It helps me key in on the slight depth changes that often means hungry fish.
I use Navionics on my S3 galaxy phone for instant tide and weather info, but it's hard to read with polarized sunglasses on. Here's what I bought; http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/lowranc ... =557685959
Here's my thread about it on the GON forum
