BK - Got a question about the Asheville NC area

Post by Shorewalker »

I will be heading up to Camp Daniel Boone Boy Scout camp with junior for a week. Google earth puts the camp 32.9 miles from Asheville.

BK, if I remember correctly you go to Asheville some and take the long rod occasionally. Tell me what to expect. I thinking mainly about what weight rods are too big to take/ what flies to throw / what materials to short list for tying. I assume that old tennis shoes might not cut it for waders but other than that I really don't have a clue about the area.

For now let's pretend that I leave the ranch and buy a fishing license. (In reality I will likely be fishing the the large stock pond for farm raised fish - this year. Adult leaders that have previously gone suggested leaving the flyrod at home and bringing a spinner with worms as more productive. I'm not a purist by any means but that seems wrong for some reason.)

I'm sure it's a distant second priority for you but when I'm visiting a new area, I always do a lookup on what the beer scene is like around town. Never been to Asheville myself, and I've heard a lot about the beer culture there. So, I can't speak for what I might be leaving off the list. But my favorite app at the moment is The Beer Mapping Project. You can view a "Google Maps" adapted version for the Asheville, NC area here:

http://beermapping.com/a/1220

You can select and deselect types of items to show on the map such as Brewpubs, Breweries, Homebrew Stores, and Beer Bars. I always find it a great resource when I'm visiting unfamiliar territory. This has turned into one of my favorite hobbies: visiting a brewery/brewpub and talking to the brewmaster if he/she is available. Sometimes it's more formal...sometimes it's not. But it's a great way to get to know the locals and learn a few tips and tricks for the brewing process. I also find a lot of inspiration for future homebrews from these guys who brew for a living.

Just something to consider when you are out and about. Also, you could bring along a couple of your scouts...I'm sure they need to earn their "Designated Driver Merit Badge." 8)

treat yourself to a guided trip.
the davidson river has the best fishing for trout i've been told. though it sees a sh@t load of flies. in the summer, the water is warm enough to wade without waders, which is nice if you ask me.

visit the local nc fly shops and ask what the current hatch would be. there are some great little streams in the pisgah forest as well. be certain that you check the stream type. some are "delayed harvest", some are "catch and release-fly only", some "catch and release-artifical only", some are "wild trout", etc. there are strick laws as to when you can fish each type of stream.
as shown below.

here's some more info

Thanks for the tips guys. To best of my knowledge I'll be riding in the church bus that I'm not allowed to drive so sightseeing / beerseeing may have to wait a year or so. The scouts have some rules about a minimum number of adult leaders required at all times so I will likely be too busy to do much more cast in the big pond for an hour or so each morning and tie some flies at night.
