Fly Knots

Question. i have typically tied a nail knot to attach the fly line to the leader in freshwater. Since i'm new to the saltwater fly fishing, i went on the advice of someone who mentioned tying a 6" section of flouro to the fly line via an albright knot. the other end of flouro would have a perfection loop tied. The leader attaches to this loop with another perfection loop. Although it's convenient in that you can change out leaders easily, all of those loops can get bulky and catch up in the guides when using a long leader.

i'm contemplating eliminating all the loops and the short 6" section. And just tie the leader directly to the fly line using a nail knot (like i use for bass and bream), or a needle knot, or just an albright.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Just a nail not has a chance of stripping the pvc off the core. I put a small loop in the end of the flyline. Just make a few needle knots with mono then glue it and you are set. Goes through the guides better than any knotted mono. This is my 12wt so I have 2 knots just to be sure.


Rio and a few others have factory welded loops.

Cortland (and others) makes a slip-on leader loop for lines that don't have a welded loop. I've been using those for 40+ years and never had one fail. To attach the leader I just double the last few inches of the butt and tie an overhand knot for a loop. The butt is so much heavier than the tippet that knot strength isn't a factor.
