Favorite Redfish and Trout Fly Patterns

Post by bk »

Recently, someone asked me which fly patterns are my favorites for redfish and trout.
Good question. Since i'm a popper junkie, i automatically said some sort of popper fly.
After that it gets hairy. Most people i know who stalk redfish with the fly prefer sight fishing for them. I haven't had much experience in that area but perhaps bearsfan could chime in on this.
For non-sight fishing (i.e. "blind casting") for reds and trout in the muddy shallows around these parts, i'll usually throw 3 or 4 different patterns in several color options and sizes.

My favorites are:

The Spoon Fly. (dupree makes a nice one) either in gold, red, or silver.
A Clouser / Deciever (tought to beat white and chartreuse for trout)
A Gurgler
A Seaducer

Again, i blind cast these, but not really blind. I just don't cast to any water. You'll wear yourself out doing that all day. I'll throw flies at areas that i believe should hold fish. Typically the same spots that i would throw conventional lures to.

Here's a decent link to a couple pages of redfish and trout patterns. http://artsnflies.com/pages/redfish.shtml

Would be interesting to see what the rest of you who whip it up throw at our forgotten coasts fish.

I do ok with a small crab pattern tied with ep fibers, rabbit, rubber legs and a little flash.

"Spoons are great if you get tired of fly fishing", a little saying my friend Brad has.

I am in the school that spoon flies do not count as fly fishing, this is not the time or place for that can of worms. For around here I have recently been using an olive shrimp fly similar to the EP spawning shrimp. Before that it was an olive deer hair slider that has caught about every saltwater game fish in FL save the F'ing permit. I think that the shrimp pattern I have been throwing has the same potential. I also like crab patterns and even more recently, shrimp gurglers. Oh yeah, bendbacks too but I suck at tying them.
